Fine Arts Ateliers at CFTA

Join us for a new series of Fine Arts ateliers now proposed to LFC Secondary school

students in our beautiful Center for the Arts.

The first two classes proposed as part of this series will be taught by LFC alumna

Margaux Comte. Topics, themes and invited artists will rotate, and this page will be updated as new workshops are announced.

Classes will be taught primarily in English, with French support available.

ABSTRACT ART - EXPLORATION

GRADES 6-8: Mondays, 4pm-6pm
Class dates: Sept 14, 21, 28, Oct 5, 12, Nov 2
GRADES 9-12: Tuesdays, 5:30pm-7:30pm
Class dates: Sept 15, 22, 29, 6, 13, 27

In this introductory abstract art class, students will explore different ways of

creating through shape, color, texture, and composition. Each week, we will

focus on a new technique or approach and experiment with a variety of mediums

and materials.

Each class will begin with a short Art History introduction to the week’s technique, looking at examples from abstract artists and their work. Students will then put these ideas into practice through guided exercises and their own creative exploration.

In the final week, students will bring together the techniques they have learned to develop and complete an original abstract artwork of their own.

INTRODUCTION TO CERAMICS (HANDBUILDING)

GRADES 6-8: Thursdays, 4pm-6pm
Class dates: Sept 17, 24, Oct 1, 8, 15, 29
GRADES 9-12: Wednesdays, 5:30pm-7:30pm
Class dates: Sept 16, 23, 30, Oct 7, 14, 28

In this introductory ceramics class, students will explore the basics of pottery

through a variety of fun, hands-on techniques, including pinching, coiling, slab

building, and texturing. They will also learn how to finish and glaze their work.

Throughout the session, students will create simple pieces such as bowls, cups, and small sculptures. They will then have the chance to choose and develop a final project of their own, such as a larger sculpture or a more detailed functional piece.

All creations will be fired in our studio, and students will be able to take their finished pieces home at the end of the session.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Margaux Comte is a multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker with experience in ceramics, sculpture, painting, printmaking, and film. She has studied and worked in the arts in both Chicago and London, and has previously led workshops and supported students in developing their own creative projects. Having grown up in French and international environments herself, she particularly looks forward to working with young people at LFC and introducing them to new artistic techniques in a way that feels approachable and encouraging. Her classes focus on experimentation, creativity, and helping students gain confidence in developing their own ideas.
