The State of Illinois allows for youths to prepare to obtain their driver’s license starting in 10th grade. The preparation takes place in three parts:

Traffic School: 30 hours of instruction
• 30 hours of in-class instruction includes classes at the Lycée on Saturdays from 8:00 to 10:30am as well as 10 hours of in-person project instruction. September 28, October 5, 12, November 2, 9, 16, 30, December 7, 14 - Permit test on December 14 after the prep class.
• Written exam
• Instruction permit

Range Driving classes
• Classes will take place at Amundsen High School on Saturdays from 7:00am to 9:00am, January 11 and January 25. Students can attend only one of these two classes. Location: Parking lot entrance is on Foster Avenue, just behind the high school. Parking lot on Damen is not used for this program.

Street Driving classes
• Traffic or behind the wheel with instructor: 4 to 6 classes. These classes can be scheduled on Saturdays at the following times: 7am to 9am, 9am to 11am, 11am to 1pm. Students will schedule their first class with their instructor during their second day of range driving. Each subsequent class will be scheduled with instructor at the end of each driving lesson. After 4, 5 or 6 classes (when they think that the student is ready), instructors will sign a form authorizing students to go get their drivers license at the DMV. Students will also need to receive from their parents a certificate confirming that they have completed their 50 hours of accompanied driving.
Students must bring their permit with them when driving with their instructor.

Accompanied Driving
After passing the written exam, students must complete driving lessons with an instructor (see above) and 50 hours behind the wheel with an adult in the car who is 21 years or older and in possession of an Illinois driver’s license for at least two years. These restrictions on accompanied driving will be explained during the course.

Parents can start taking students on the road with them once they have received their permit (code). We recommend waiting for at minima completion of a range driving lesson before doing so. When driving with their parents, students must have their permit with them in the car.
